Cabrini Partnership Has Provided
more than 25 Years of Service
Frustrated by their inability to break the reoccurring cycle of long-term homelessness that debilitated their church-shelter guests, the parishioners of St. Frances Cabrini Church decided to create a housing program where residents with persistent mental health and chemical abuse problems would get what they needed to make realistic changes in their lives. In 1985 they created the Cabrini Partnership Transitional Housing Program (then known as Cabrini House). Since opening its doors, Cabrini Partnership’s reputation in the community and the social service field has grown as an increasingly successful, motivating program that vigorously addresses the core challenges faced by individuals with co-occurring mental illness and chemical dependency.
In 2000 Cabrini Partnership launched a new program (formerly known as Cabrini Independent Living Program, CILP) providing permanent supportive housing with a grant from HUD. It rented 20 apartments at various sites which were subleased to former transitional housing residents, particularly those diagnosed with chronic mental health problems. The goal is for residents to retain permanent housing and become more self sufficient.
In 2004 Cabrini Partnership established the goal to expand its permanent supportive housing. The first step was to partner with Project for Pride in Living (PPL) on Van Cleve Development, located in the Southeast Como neighborhood of Minneapolis across from Van Cleve Park. Eighty-five units of affordable rental housing in two buildings have been built, with 20 apartments for the Cabrini Partnership Permanent Supportive Housing Program. The Cabrini Partnership supportive housing and administrative staff have offices. There is also a community room and education lab for the Supported Employment Program in Brook Commons, one of the buildings in the development.
In 2009 Cabrini Partnership began a collaboration with Hope Community. Together, they provide 15 homeless adults with a safe place to live in an apartment building owned by Hope Community and supportive services provided by an on-site Cabrini case manager.
Cabrini Partnership embraced the State of Minnesota and Hennepin County’s goal to End Long-Term Homelessness by 2010. Cabrini Partnership offers a continuum of housing and support services designed to help people have stabilized housing and those services which give them the opportunity to reclaim hope, restore dignity and realize their potential for self-reliance and productive citizenship.
